Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important free tool for getting local customers. When someone searches "landscaper near me" or "electrician in Shrewsbury", the Google Maps pack shows three businesses. Your GBP determines whether you're one of them.
Step 1: Claim or create your profile
Go to business.google.com and search for your business. If it already exists (Google often creates listings automatically), claim it. If not, create one. You'll need to verify by postcard, phone, or email.
Step 2: Fill out every field
Google rewards complete profiles. Fill out: business name (exactly as it appears in real life), primary category (e.g., "Plumber"), secondary categories, service area, opening hours, phone number, website URL, and business description.
Step 3: Write a proper business description
You have 750 characters. Use them. Mention your trade, your services, and the areas you cover. Example: "Gary Pearce Landscapes provides professional landscaping, garden design, and maintenance services across Shrewsbury and Shropshire. From full garden transformations to regular upkeep, we bring your outdoor space to life."
Step 4: Add services
List every service you offer with a brief description. This helps Google match you to specific searches.
Step 5: Add photos
Profiles with photos get 42% more requests for directions and 35% more clicks to websites. Add photos of your work, your van, your team, and your logo.
Step 6: Get reviews
Reviews are the #1 ranking factor for the Maps pack. Send every happy customer a direct link to your review page. A simple text message after completing a job works best: "Thanks for choosing us! If you were happy with the work, a quick Google review would mean a lot: [link]"
Step 7: Post regularly
Google likes active profiles. Post updates, offers, or photos once a week. It takes 2 minutes and signals to Google that your business is active.
